National Poetry Month

Did you know that April is National Poetry Month! It really is!! 30 days of celebrating the joy, expressiveness, and pure delight of poetry. Here is a bit of history: National Poetry Month was inaugurated by the Academy of American Poets in 1996. Over the years, it has become the largest literary celebration in the world with schools, publishers, libraries, booksellers, and poets celebrating poetry’s vital place in American culture. We are happy to introduce this event in Lingvoexpress. During our class work with two young poetesses Valya and Alina we tried to translate the poem by a famous Irish poet William Butler Yeats.

The poem is called "When You Are Old". Sounds sad, isn't it? But let's see how they managed to translate it: HERE IS THE ORIGINAL VERSION When you are old and grey and full of sleep, And nodding by the fire, take down this book, And slowly read, and dream of the soft look Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep; How many loved your moments of glad grace, And loved your beauty with love false or true, But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you, And loved the sorrows of your changing face; And bending down beside the glowing bars, Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled And paced upon the mountains overhead And hid his face amid a crowd of stars. And here is the girl's version: Когда ты стар и сер и полон сна И дремлешь у огня, возьми книгу и медленно читай, мечтай о нежном взгляде,что глаза имели так давно,что только тень осталась навсегда.

Многие любили красоту в тебе Не знаю,правду говорили или нагло лгали, Но лишь один действительно любил тебя И восхищался каждый день печалью твоего лица. Склонившись над камином, С грустью вспоминаешь , что Любовь исчезла ...

И несёшься по вершинам гор,скрывая лицо в скоплении звёзд...
